Health is Wealth: Essential Wellness Tips for Today's Stressed-Out Attorney

David Hunter, CFP®

“It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can't buy.”  - George Horace Lorimer

Maintaining financial health is vital, but not at the expense of mental and physical well-being. A recent study underscores a concerning trend: approximately 77% of lawyers report burnout1. This perfectionism, driving their success, can also impact physical well-being. Another study revealed 64% of respondents regularly feel anxiety and over 10% feel they have an alcohol problem2.

Various sustainable solutions exist for balancing health with job demands, and we've highlighted several effective stress-relief strategies for lawyers facing these challenges.

Exercise

Regular exercise plays a pivotal role in promoting mental health and well-being. Physical activity has been linked to the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that act as natural mood lifters, reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression3. Additionally, exercise enhances cognitive function, improves sleep quality, and fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem.

Beyond the physiological benefits, engaging in regular physical activity provides individuals with a constructive outlet for managing stress and negative emotions, contributing to a more resilient and balanced mental state.

Support

Support groups are essential for lawyers managing stress, offering emotional relief and understanding. Whether within professional networks, religious affiliations, or among friends, these groups provide a platform for sharing experiences and gaining insights from others facing similar pressures.

Professionally aligned groups offer specialized guidance, while those tied to religious or social circles create a nurturing environment for shared perspectives and coping strategies. This collective support fosters camaraderie and empathy, reminding lawyers they are not alone in navigating the unique stressors of their profession.

Feed your soul

Meditation stands as a valuable tool for lawyers seeking balance and mental well-being in the face of the intense demands of their profession. Embracing meditation practices allows lawyers to cultivate mindfulness, improve focus, and effectively manage stress. By dedicating time to quiet reflection, lawyers can enhance their emotional resilience, reduce anxiety, and gain a clearer perspective on their cases and professional challenges.

Incorporating meditation into their routine can provide lawyers with a practical means to foster a calm and centered mindset, ultimately contributing to improved decision-making and overall job satisfaction.

Revisit your financial purpose

Define your "Why" – the driving force behind your professional choices. While many lawyers initially frame their motivation in financial terms like "Maximizing wealth" or "Saving on taxes," consider delving deeper to uncover the true essence of your goals.

Look beyond financial gains and explore how achieving them may enhance your life. Satisfaction might stem from "Friday afternoons with my kids," "playing golf twice a week," or "more time with my family." Aligning your firm's financial pursuits with your personal values often proves more fulfilling than mere fiscal achievements or tax optimization.

Understanding your financial purpose will also help you stay the course when making challenging financial decisions. It lives above the minutiae of day-to-day challenges such as market fluctuations, societal comparisons, or even your firm's success if it comes at the cost of your physical and mental well-being.
